It has to be a product that no one can called a scam for sure. Something you can get away with. And that’s the beauty of it because you can then come back and do the same thing in a different variation again and again.

Create A Directory-Like Site
Not a regular directory where people submit links to their sites but some variation of it like a membership site that collects people’s email and site details and must give people the impression that it’s something new and will do wonders for blog traffic.
Create A Widget For It
The widget to increase blog traffic will be placed on member sites which creates a backlink to your Site. Make it mandatory that the widget be displayed on member sites.
Market The Site As A Traffic Funnel
We all want traffic. It doesn’t matter if the Site is still unproven as to whether it really attracts and brings traffic to your site - the key thing is to make people think it that does.
Get A-List Bloggers To Endorse It
Buy paid reviews from A-list bloggers like John Chow and make sure he becomes a member of the Site himself. Display his membership prominently on the Site.
Create A Points System
Have some kind of points system where members have to collect a certain number of points either by getting more members to join or visiting other members’ sites. Have some prize, maybe a review by John Chow or free ad when you reach a certain amount.
Create Perceived Value
Have the value of membership increase after certain number so as to create some perceived value. For example, membership costs $10 after the 100th member, $100 after the 500th member and so on.
Create Buzz
Create buzz by leaking into the blogosphere that a member sold his membership for thousands.
Sell The Site
You now have a site with a respectable PageRank from all the member links pointing to you and a member database of several thousand. When membership seems to have slowed down significantly, put the site up for sale on SitePoint.

This basic plan can be recycled into other variations but the key is that it must be marketed as a traffic booster. If membership can be pegged to some value and can be resold, all the better.
