Increasing blog traffic is always a popular topic for bloggers especially for the majority of us who are seeing less than ideal visitor numbers. The usual ways of increasing blog traffic such as writing good content, leaving trackbacks and comments on other blogs, and submitting articles to free article directories still hold true but I found that there are still many more traffic tactics that can be used.

1. Write Testimonials

People are always looking for testimonials to feature either for their sales page or ebook. Write a good review for a product or service you like. Your website will be featured alongside your testimonial which will bring a stream of visitors. Doing many testimonials will bring in new visitors from all over.

2. Submit Regular Press Releases

Distributing regular press releases which are well written, interesting and relevant to your target audience gets your name out there. If you have something newsworthy or an exciting new product, the media will be willing to publish it. OpenPR, Free Press Release and PRLeap are some free wire services you can use.

3. Submit Your Blog For Awards

Best Blog Of All Time Award There are lots of award sites to submit your blog. Even if you don’t win, getting listed in its nomination list will give some exposure and hopefully bring some traffic to people who want to check out your blog. Do check first to see if your blog meets the criteria for nomination. If the award is fairly reputable, put its award emblem on your site. A Google search will throw up a good number of awards sites.

4. Do Something Crazy Or Controversial That Gets People Talking

Recently, the pop band Radiohead announced that they were putting up their latest album online and people can pay whatever amount they want to download it. They can even download it for free. This kind of unprecedented move gained them lots of buzz and publicity. So if you manage to do something similar in impact, you will attract loads of traffic.

5. Advertise In Ezines

Pick an ezine that is relevant to your blog topic and buy repeat ads in it. An ezine with 50,000 subscribers may not necessarily get you more traffic than one with 5,000 subscribers if it is not targeted. Advertise in a smaller list with a laser targeted audience and superior content than one that’s filled with ads. To further stretch your dollar, use the ads as leads where you offer something free in exchange for an email address to follow up. You will also get to build up your own list of email subscribers. If your giveaway is a viral lead generator which people pass on to their friends, you’ll create a viral effect beyond what the ads can generate.

6. Buy Banner Ads

Banner ads are an excellent source of cheap, targeted traffic. Often overlooked because they’ve gotten a bad name over the last years, buying banners ads on a site with relevant content and a reasonable amount of targeted traffic still offers good value for your advertising dollar. A banner ad can cost as low as US$25 a month.

7. Post A Good Article In A Relevant Forum Or Newsgroup

Instead of just submitting to article directories, you can get improved results if you publish your article in a forum or newsgroup relevant to your blog. Make sure your article offers genuine value and information that will entice readers to visit your site in search of more articles.

8. Review Books For Online Bookstores

Go to the major online bookstores such as Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com and write good reviews of popular books that will be of interest to your target audience. Include your website at the end of the review.

The owners have given them up either because they’ve moved on to other things or couldn’t find a way to make money with them. 10. Make Custom And Error Pages

These pages are usually left blank except for the 404 error message. Create a custom message that says the specific page cannot be found but include some links that will allow visitors to explore other pages of the site. This will keep them on your site instead of just clicking away.

11. Create A Topic Specific Reference Article

This is the kind of content that people refer to on a regular basis and even link to it from their own site since most people are just too lazy to write their own. For example, write an article explaining what RSS Feed or PageRank is all about and how they work. If well written, people are likely to link to them and bring visitors from their own site to yours.

Most magazines will have an online version of their publication. When you write for a publication, include your website and if your magazine article is well written, it could lead to new readers visiting your blog.

14. Join An Association

Network and join your local association of bloggers. This can lead to new joint venture opportunities, link exchanges and referrals which will benefit your blog in terms of increased exposure and blog traffic.

15. Track Your Traffic Logs

Check your web logs and see what keywords bring in the most traffic and use this information to optimize your site with them. Write an article for each of the most popular keywords or key phrases. These pages will rank higher in search engine results since they contain targeted rather than general content resulting in a potential increase in traffic.

16. Create A “Top #” Ranking System

For some reason, people are drawn to lists of anything. Create a list that’s relevant to your blog topic and people will be interested to see who’s on the list. If you can create a ranking system that changes with certain criteria such as the Top 100 Make Money Online Blogs, people will keep coming back to check where they rank on the list. You will also get backlinks from every blog on the list.

I guess you forgot to include the old school bloghopping and commenting on blog to increase blog traffic tips. It still works for me though.

I am commenting and bloghopping through over 100 blogs a day. The results has been very appealing.

I didn’t forget about leaving comments on other blogs. I mentioned that in the second sentence - about the usual ways of getting traffic.
